MSJC Men Win 5th Straight to Open RCC Tournament

The MSJC men's basketball team scored the final eight points of the game on Tuesday night as they picked up a win over LA Trade Tech 84-80 in the opening round of the Riverside Holiday Tournament.samtradetech.jpg

The Eagles led by five at the half, before a second half rally by Trade Tech gave them a late 80-76 lead.  PeeWee Gardner made a driving jump shot to cut the lead to 2 with just over 2:30 left to play and then Samuel Williams tied the game on the next possession with two free throws.  Williams scored again with 1:36 left on an assist from Blake O'Donnell to give MSJC the lead back at 82-80.  Gardner put the game out of reach with 7 seconds remaining when he hit two free throws.

Williams finished the day with a team high 22 points to go along with 5 rebounds, while Gardner ended his night with 20 points and 5 assists.  Tre Hunter added 11 points and Alan Palesano had 10.  Austin Klug had a strong night off the bench scoring 10 points and hauling in 7 rebounds.

The win, which was the Eagles fifth straight, improved their record to 9-3 on the season.  MSJC currently ranked #7 in the state will play in the quarter-final round of the RCC Tournament on Thursday at 5 pm when they take on Chaffey.  Chaffey enters the game 10-3 overall and ranked #16 in the state.
