The MSJC men's basketball team won on Thursday and Friday, but were unable to take down Saddleback in the championship game of the Bill Brummell Classic in Mission Viejo.
The Eagles opened the tournament on Thursday with a 78-71 win over Irvine Valley. Roosevelt Adams came off the bench for the first time this season and responded with a game high 22 points. Tre Nottingham added 18 points and 5 assists as MSJC built an 11 point halftime lead. Nick Pete also hit double figures in scoring with 11 while pulling down 6 rebounds and blocking two shots.
Friday The Eagles started fast and never looked back as they defeated San Diego City College 81-55 in the tourney semi-finals. Nottingham led the way on offense with 18 once again as four MSJC players reached double figures. Dvein Fleming added 14 points while both Kendall Brown and Tyler Cooper each had 12. Adams was once again solid as he scored 8 points and had a game high 8 rebounds.
The Eagles had a hard time finding offense in Saturday's championship game as they lost to the host and state's #1 ranked team Saddleback 62-51. MSJC managed just 20 points in the first half and trailed at the break 31-20. In a game that saw two ties and four lead changes early, the Gauchos were able to hold off MSJC in the second half as they teams played evenly over the second twenty minutes. Four MSJC players did the majority of the scoring in the title contest as Fleming and Adams both scored 11 points and Brown and Nottingham both added 10. Nick Pete pulled in a game high 8 rebounds and blocked 4 shots in the loss.
Nottingham and Adams were both named to the All Tournament Team for MSJC, who is now 12-4 on the year. Saddleback improved to 14-1 with the victory. The Eagles will be off for the Holidays, but will return to action on Saturday January 2nd when they host College of the Desert. The game on the second tips off at 3 pm.
