Men's Basketball Opens Season Going 2-1
The MSJC men's basketball team opened the season winning two of three games at the Ohlone Tournament in Fremont over the weekend.
On Thursday the Eagles won their season opener with an 86-67 victory over Hartnell. MSJC started the game fast and cruised home with the victory as all 14 MSJC players saw action and 10 different players scored. Sam Williams had a big day as he scored 28 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to lead the way. Alan Palesano and Pee Wee Gardner both had 12 points. Palesano made four three point shots and Gardner added 10 assists. Blake O'Donnell also hit double digits in scoring with 10.
In Friday's semi-final game against Canada both teams offenses were hot as the Eagles fell in overtime 116-108. Friday it was once again Williams who led the way with 36 points for MSJC while O'Donnell had 20, Tre Hunter added 16, and Isaiah Jones scored 10. MSJC made a big comeback to force overtime as they overcame a 16 point second half deficit, but couldn't pull off the victory in the extra session.
The Eagles rebounded on Saturday to take third place in the tournament as they beat Cabrillo 83-74. Williams finished his strong weekend with 27 points and 9 rebounds. O'Donnell had 15 points and Gardner had 12 and 6 assists while Hunter hit double figures once again with 11. Williams was named to the All Tournament Team for his work in the three games.
The Eagles 2-1 on the season will now head to the San Diego City Knight Invitational this weekend. MSJC opens play in that tournament on Friday night at SD City against Oxnard. Tip-off on Friday is set for 7 pm.
