The MSJC men's basketball team ran into a hot shooting Saddleback squad on Wednesday night and came out on the short end of a 99-75 game in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Semi-Finals in Mission Viejo.
The Eagles scored the first basket of the night to take a 2-0 lead, but two possessions later Saddleback led 5-2 and would never trail again in the contest. Despite 10 first half points from both Samuel Williams and Blake O'Donnell MSJC trailed 49-36 at half in part due to the Gauchos shooting 19 for 35 in the first 20 minutes and going 5 for 10 from beyond the three point line.
In the second half Saddleback's shooting went to a whole new level as they made 18 of 27 field goal attempts and went 4 of 5 on three point shots. The Gauchos finished the game shooting 59.7% from the floor and 60% from beyond the arc. Saddleback also dominated the glass out rebounding the Eagles 42-26.
Williams and O'Donnell tied for team high scoring honors for MSJC with 20 points a piece and Tre Hunter came off the bench to add 12 in the loss. Five Gaucho players ended the night in double figures and a sixth player scored 9 points.
The Eagles who won their second straight Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division crown this year finish the season with a 23-8 overall record. Saddleback improved to 30-2 and advanced to the So Cal Regional Final on Saturday when they will host San Bernardino Valley.
