Men's Basketball Wins 2 of 3 at Cuesta Tourney

The MSJC men's basketball team won two of three games this weekend at the Cuesta Tournament to bring home the event's third place trophy.DavonforCuesta-18.jpg

The Eagles started with a victory on Friday over LA Harbor76-68.  MSJC built a lead of 40-27 on their way to the victory.  Davon Sanders led the Eagles offense on the day with 20 points, he also pulled in a team high 8 rebounds.  C.J. Hyder added 12 points and Jeremy Bonifacio had 9 in the victory.

In the tournament semi-finals the Eagles had the ball down by 1 in the final minute of the game, but a costly turnover resulted in a 66-63 loss to East Los Angeles.  MSJC held a 9 point lead at the half, but the Huskies hit some big shots in the second to come away with the victory.  Sanders once again led the Eagles in scoring with 22 while DeAndre Snedecor also reached double figures with 10 points.  MSJC shot 48% from the field in the game, but went just 6 of 23 from beyond the three point line.

In Sunday's third place game MSJC defeated tournament host Cuesta 65-57.  The Eagles made a late push in the final 5 minutes of the first half to take control of the game building a lead of 35-23 at the break.  David Thompson led three Eagles in double figures Sunday with 16 points.  Sanders added 15 and Snedecor had 10.

The Eagles concluded the non-conference portion of their schedule with a record of 8-11, 14 of their 19 games have been played against teams ranked in the CCCAA State poll.  MSJC will begin conference play on Saturday January 13th when they host San Diego Miramar at 3 pm.  The Eagles open conference play as the four time defending Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division Champions.
