Men's Hoops Open Season at SD City Tourney
The MSJC men's basketball team opened their season this weekend going 1-2 at the San Diego City Knights Invitational.
The Eagles opened the year with a 101-80 victory over Barstow. MSJC ran their way to a halftime lead of 48-33 and continued to control the game in the second half on their way to the win. Davon Sanders led a balanced offensive attack for the Eagles with a team high 20 points. DeAndre Snedecor added 18 points and Israel Farrington also reached double figures with 10. All fourteen Eagle players who played in the game scored at least 1 point. Terrance Williams passed out 5 assists and Snedecor also grabbed a team high 8 boards.
In the tournament semi-finals the Eagles took on the host team San Diego City, the defending State Champions, and despite being down just one at the half lost 99-81. MSJC kept it within striking distance on Saturday until the final four minutes. Once again Sanders led the offense for the Eagles as he scored a game high 23 points, he also grabbed a game high 12 rebounds. David Thompson added 15 points while Farrington was just short of a double double with 8 points and 10 boards.
In Sunday's third place game the Eagles jumped out to a 45-34 halftime lead over Citrus, but couldn't hold on down the stretch as the Owls took the victory 86-80. Sanders led in scoring for the third straight day with 17 while Thompson scored 15 for the second day in a row to lead the Eagles offense.
The Eagles will be right back in action on Wednesday when they begin play in the Fullerton College Tournament. MSJC opens that tourney with a game against College of the Canyons at 5 pm.
MSJC's Davon Sanders was the Eagles leading scorer in all three of the team's games over the weekend as the men's basketball team opened the season at the San Diego City Tournament. MSJC went 1-2 on the weekend and will be back in action Wednesday at the Fullerton Tournament when they open with College of the Canyons at 5 pm.
