Men's Tennis Team Advances to So Cal Finals
The MSJC men's tennis team defeated visiting Ventura College 5-1 Tuesday afternoon in the Southern California Regional Semi-Finals. The Eagles are now in the state Final Four and will play for the Southern California Championship next week.
The Eagles won for the second straight week without having to go to the doubles portion of the match. Mensford Owusu, Laszlo Imre, Luis Jaimes, Alex Miehle, and Godi Enock all won in straight sets as the Eagles defeated the Pirates for the second time this season. Miehle rallied from down 5-4 in the second set to win 7-5 and clinch the match for the Eagles.
MSJC is now 22-5 on the season and will take on College of the Desert next week in Palm Desert for the Southern California Championship. The Roadrunners are the defending state champions and will enter the contest undefeated on the season. The teams have battled three times this year with COD narrowly winning all three matches. Two matches were won 5-4 and the third 6-3. The Eagles have never advanced to the Regional Finals match as a team, but did produce the individual state champion in Gabor Toth in 2010. Last season MSJC was eliminated in the So Cal Regional Semi-Finals by Cypress. Next Wednesday's match wil be at 2 pm at the Indain Wells Tennis Garden.
Before MSJC takes on COD they will travel this weekend to Ojai to take part in the prestigious Ojai Tournament. The 2010 Eagle squad won the team event at Ojai for the first time in history.
