Witt and Tetteh Qualify for State Meet; Mensah P.O.Y.

The MSJC Men's Tennis team had a very strong showing this past week at the Southern California Mens Individual Regionals held at Long Beach City College. Representing the eagles in singles play were Taylor Witt (#7 seed), Richard Tetteh, Bruno Reich (#17 seed) and Carlos Marquez. The singles draw was loaded with talented players whom hEmmanuel mensahad qualified through each of their respective conference tournaments. Unfortunately, MSJC did not have any singles players qualify for the state individuals in Sacramento, but they each played very tough and respectable tennis nonetheless.
The doubles draw was also just as competitive. Richard Tetteh and Taylor Witt entered the regional tournament seeded #4 thanks to their strong showing at the Ojai tournament the previous week. Carlos Marquez and Bruno Reich also qualified to play the regional tournament by virtue of their South Coast Conference tournament result. Carlos and Bruno received a tough draw yet played very hard fought match going down to the #1 doubles team from Irvine Valley College, 6-2 in the 3rd set in the round of 32. Richard and Taylor continued to dominate their opponents just as they had at the Ojai tournament. They received a bye in the 1st round and then defeated a very motivated Cypress College team in the round of 32. This set up a very tough round of 16 qualifying match-up against the #2 doubles team from Cerritos College. After splitting the 1st two sets, Richard and Taylor blew through their opponents to take the 3rd set by the score of 6-2.
As a result of their doubles wins Richard and Taylor have qualified for the state individual tournament taking place this Friday and Saturday in Sacramento. This will be the 2nd consecutive season that the MSJC men's tennis team will be represented at the state tournament.
On another note, #1 singles player Emmanuel Mensah has been awarded one of the ITA's highest honors winning the Rookie of the Year award for the 2009 season. Emmanuel was also chosen by the South Coast Conference coaches as the conference men's tennis player of the year. Congratulations goes out to Emmanuel on a very successful freshman season!
Emmanuel Mensah was named the South Coast Conference Men's Player of the Year in tennis as well as the ITA's rookie of the year.
