Eagles Split a Pair in Hoops Over the Weekend

The Mt. San Jacinto men's basketball team split a pair of games against ranked teams this weekend at the Hemet Elks Tip-off Classic at the Eagles gymnasium.

Friday night the Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the state's #17 ranked team the Fullerton Hornets by a score of 97-80. Freshman guard Shenon Johannes led the way with 21 points while returning starter Mark Williams added 17. The other Eagles to reach double figures on the night were Melvin Goins 14, Curtis Bush 11, and San O'Shea 10. MSJC controlled the game from the outset and took a 12 point lead into the locker room. Fullerton came out in the second half and cut the lead to six, but that is as close as the Hornets would come as the Eagles took advantage of some foul problems for Fullerton connecting on 38 free throws in the game.

On Saturday night the Eagles took on the state's #4 ranked team Riverside. MSJC led most of the way, but a late run by the Tigers spurred them onto a 71-64 victory. Goins was the offensive star of the night for MSJC scoring 21 points including three 3 point baskets. Williams and Bush once again reached double digits for the Eagles with 12 and 10 points. The loss dropped the Eagles record to 2-3 on the season.

MSJC is back in action Wednesday November 19th when they host San Diego Mesa College at 7 pm.
