The MSJC Eagle football team held a black and red scrimmage on Saturday that left the coaching staff looking forward to the up coming season.
The Eagles open the season on Saturday September 5th at 1 pm when they host Chaffey College at Carl Quandt Stadium. On Saturday MSJC looked solid on both sides of the ball, but it was the defense who controlled most of the afternoon. "We played well on defense," said Defensive Coordinator Gregg Shaw, "Our guys played hard and right now that's what we are looking for." For the defense overall Coach Shaw likes what he's seen not only Saturday, but throughout pre-season camp. "I think we have better team speed this year on defense and we have more depth at linebacker and on the defensive line."
On the offensive side of the ball head coach Casey Mazzotta was pleased in some areas and also now has a better understanding of what his team still needs to work on. "I think we did a nice job in the intermediate passing game," said Mazzotta, "We have some work to do on the quick game, but overall it was solid." Mazzotta also praised the control of his quarterbacks during the scrimmage, "They did a nice job of controlling things on offense, they had good presence in the huddle and didn't miss any of our audible calls." The most exciting offensive play of the day was turned in by freshman Tyrone Richardson from West Valley High as he took a fly sweep around end for a touchdown.
The Eagles will continue practice the next two weeks in preparation for their opener on September 5th. "It was a good time to let guys kind of see where they stand and start to move forward towards the first game," said Mazzotta.
