The MSJC football team got their first victory of the season Saturday (Oct. 13th) as they defeated Mesa College 26-21 in this year's homecoming game.
The Eagles trailed after one quarter 14-3, but overcame three first half fumbles to out score the Olympians 23-7 the rest of the way for the win. The Eagles defense did not allow any second half points and the offense kicked it into high gear to outscore Mesa 16-0 in the second half.
The offense got a jump start in the second quarter when wide out Daniel Chamberlin, took a hand off and then threw it 23 yards down field to Demetri Scotto for the Eagles first touchdown of the day. In the third quarter John Babcock hit a 40 yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-13 with 5:45 to play, and then four minutes later the Eagles added a touchdown on a one yard run by Casey Gross. The two point conversion failed and the third quarter ended with the Eagles trailing 21-19.
In the fourth quarter the Eagles defense remained strong an with 5:25 to go in the game Chamberlin again made a big play this time being on the receiving end of a 66 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Collin Wigley.
Wigley on the afternoon threw for 373 yards going 27-33 with one touchdown and no interceptions. Chamberlin along with tight end Derrick Lamoreux led the way receiving with six catches each for over 100 yards. The running game was led by Anthony Washington who ran 56 yards on the day, Wigley added 40 yards rushing and Gross chipped in with 26 yards and a TD. Defensively Reginald Hairston added an interception, and Pulu Otukolo led the way with 13 tackles.
The Eagles who moved to 1-3 in the Foothill Conference and 1-5 overall will host Chaffey College Saturday October 20th at 1 pm at Carl Quandt Stadium.
