Lady Eagles Take Third at Thanksgiving Classic
The MSJC women's basketball team took third place at the College of the Desert Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend, winning two games and losing one.
Friday the Lady Eagles kicked off the tournament with a 60-52 victory over previously unbeaten L.A. City. Danielle Smith was the leading scorer for MSJC with 19 points while teammates Rayven Lewis and Brandi McCann had 8 each.
In Saturday's semi-final the Lady Eagles suffered their first defeat of the season losing to the state's #6 ranked team Pasadena City College 69-56. The Lady Eagles struggled to make shots shooting just 30% from the field including 3 of 23 from behind the three point line. Nicole Villalobos was the Lady Eagles leading scorer with 17 points to go along with 9 rebounds. Jasmyn Russell chipped in with 12 and Smith added 11 for MSJC.
Sunday MSJC bounced back to beat West Los Angeles College 53-51 despite another poor shooting performance. Smith made two free throws with nine seconds to play to insure the victory for the Lady Eagles. Smith once again was the leading scorer with 17 points while Autum Jenkins and Julia Oberst both had 10 in the win. For her efforts over the weekend Smith was named to the All Tournament Team.
MSJC now stands at 6-1 on the season and are right back in action on Tuesday December 2nd when they travel to El Cajon to take on Cuyamaca College in a 4 pm game.
