Taylor Witt became the first MSJC tennis player in school history to win the individual championship at the Pacific Coast Conference Tournament this weekend. Witt, who was seeded fourth entering the tournament, beat top seed Joao Toledo (Grossmont) 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals and #3 seed Waylon Bennett (Grossmont) 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.
Five MSJC singles players in all qualified for the Southern California Regional next week as well as all three doubles teams. Corey Sheehan, Francisco Alvarado, Mitchell Grejeda, and Dan Nguyen-Huu, joined Witt as singles qualifiers. The doubles teams of Alvarado/Huu, Sheehan/Witt, and Grajeda/Carlos Marquez will also compete in the Regional this weekend hosted by Riverside Community College.
In team competition the Eagles will travel to RCC tomorrow to take on the Tigers in the first round of the team regional. The Eagles will compete in the state play-offs for the first time in school history. MSJC is seeded fifth in So. Cal while the Tigers are #4. RCC defeated the Eagles earlier this season in a highly competitive match that ended 5-4.
