Dimitra Tsambasis of the MSJC women's soccer team and Danny Hopkins of the men's basketball team were honored as the Eagles Scholar Athletes of the Year at last night's honors convocation.
The pair also each received a $500 scholarship on Thursday at the MSJC Scholarship Breakfast, sponsored by The Hemet Valley Kiwanis Club. The club also honors a local student athlete in the community once a month with a $100 dollar donation to the represented program.
Tsambasis was a second team All Pacific Coast Conference performer this past season as a freshman. She led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 27 points. Her 11 goal and 5 assist totals also ranked her in the top 5 of the PCAC North Division. "Demi" helped lead the soccer team to just the second play-off appearance in school history and a second place conference finish. She also completed the fall semester with a 4.0 grade point average and expects to earn the same this Spring.
Hopkins was a key member of the men's basketball team who captured the PCAC North Division championship this season and advanced to the State Final Eight. The Eagles finished the season 25-5 and Danny was second on the team in made three point baskets with 38. Danny also led the team in free throw percentage shooting 83% for the season. Danny is still deciding on where he will continue his education and playing career next season. Danny will earn his AA degree next week at MSJC's graduation with a 3.4 gpa.
