Eagle Softball Team Rallies for Win Over Grossmont
The MSJC softball team stormed back from a 3-0 deficit on Wednesday to win a conference home game over Grossmont 11-3 in six innings.
Grossmont started the game quickly as Sydney Vates, just the third batter of the game, crushed a two run homerun over the left field fence to give the Griffons a quick 2-0 lead. Grossmont would add one more in the top of the first with an unearned run to jump out to the 3-0 lead. From that point on MSJC pitcher Ruby Gonzalez settled in and took control of the game allowing just one hit after the first inning and shutting out the Griffons the rest of the way.
MSJC picked up one run in the bottom of the fourth when Kerry Hernandez singled to right field to drive in Arianna Abarca. The Eagles then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Nana Davidson, Savanah Ruiz, Nathalie Rocha, and Brittni Heath all picked up RBIs in the fifth and Grossmont committed a couple of key errors to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead. MSJC kept the pressure on in the sixth and ended the game early on the 8 run rule when Hernandez hit a two run single for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Hernandez finished the day with 3 hits and 3 RBIs while Davidson, Heath, Ruiz, and Rocha had two a piece. Gonzalez pitched 6 innings allowing just the two earned runs, she struck out 9 while walking 3 to earn the victory.
The Eagles are now 10-11 overall on the season and 2-4 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference games while Grossmont fell to 4-18-1 and 2-3. MSJC will be back at home on the Menifee Campus Friday at 1 pm when they take on Imperial Valley.
