The MSJC softball team rallied to score a run in the bottom of the 8th inning on Friday and pick up their second straight Pacific Coast Athletic Conference victory 2-1 over visiting Grossmont College.
The Griffons got on the board first as Amanda Hartnet hit a sacrifice fly in the top half of the first inning giving Grossmont their only run of the day. The Lady Eagles would answer in the bottom of the third when Alyssa Rayls singled to left field scoring Jena Chilson to tie the game at 1-1. Solid pitching and fielding took over the next four innings as neither team could push a run across the plate forcing the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 8th MSJC pitcher, Chilson was able to retire the Griffons three up and three down. In the bottom of the extra frame Nicole Stressling led off with a single and promptly stole second. Gabby Sanchez was then hit by a pitch putting two runners on with nobody out. Angie Lopez sacrificed Stressling to third and Sanchez to second before a strike out by Grossmont pitcher Nicole Balinger made it two down. With two on and two out Ashley Brown came through with an infield single scoring Stressling with the winning run.
Brown finished the game as the only MSJC player with more than 1 hit. Chilson finished her day throwing 8 innings and allowing just one run and 7 hits. The win improved the Lady Eagles record to 9-14 overall on the season and 3-7 in PCAC play while Grossmont fell to 10-13-1 overall and 6-4.
MSJC will only play once this week when they travel to Imperial Valley on Wednesday for a 1 pm contest.
