MSJC Softball Loses Close One to Southwestern
The MSJC softball team led 3-1 after three innings on Tuesday, but couldn't hold on as they fell to Southwestern 4-3 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game in Menifee.
Both teams were able to score a run a piece in the first inning with solo homeruns. Yazzy Jameson of Southwestern hit a homerun off MSJC starting pitcher Jena Chilson in the top of the first to give the Jaguars an early lead, but Chilson answered back when she hit a two out bases empty homer of her own in the bottom of the 1st to tie the score. The Lady Eagles would take the lead in the bottom of the third when Angie Lopez and Jordan Sage each picked up an RBI scoring Amanda Escalera and Nicole Stressling to give MSJC a 3-1 edge. Southwestern cut the Lady Eagles advantage to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fourth, and then were able to grab the lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth. MSJC was able to get two runners on in the bottom of the 7th , but were unable to push the tying run across the plate.
MSJC had 5 total hits on the day, while the Jaguars managed just 7. Sage took the pitching loss for MSJC after coming on in relief of Chilson and throwing the final three innings.
The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 4-4 in PCAC play while they are now 14-10 overall. Southwestern improved to 4-4 in conference and they are 16-10-1 on the season. MSJC will be right back in action today (Wednesday March 16th) when they host San Diego Mesa at 3 pm on the Menifee Campus.
