Softball Season Starts with MSJC Winning 3 of 4

The MSJC softball team kicked off their 2018 season over the weekend and won three of four games at the Glendale Tournament.

The Lady Eagles got things started on Friday night with a pair of wins as they defeated Glendale 8-5 and then clubbed Santa Monica 16-4.  In the Glendale game it was complete team effort as eight different MSJC players had at least one hit and four Eagles had 2 hits a piece.  Nat Rocha and Arianna Laramie led the way as they both went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Rocha had a homerun. Summer Smith and Kerry Hernandez also each had two hits in the victory.  Alissa Erl went the distance in the pitching circle for MSJC giving up three earned runs over 5 innings of work.  In game two the Lady Eagles exploded for six runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back in an easy win over Santa Monica.  This time 9 different MSJC players had hits.  Savanah Ruiz led the onslaught as she hit a pair of homeruns and drove in 5 runs for the Lady Eagles.  Smith and Ari Abarca each drove in 3 runs for MSJC while both Hernandez and Laramie had 2 RBIs.  Erl picked up her second pitching victory of the evening as she threw three innings allowing no earned runs.  Nat Valles pitched the final two innings for MSJC.

Saturday evening it was a little slower start offensively as the Lady Eagles were defeated by Ventura 2-0.  Abarca had two of MSJC's five hits in the game.  Erl had another strong outing in the circle as she went all six innings allowing just a pair of runs, but ended up the tough luck loser in the contest.  MSJC then found their bats once again in the final game of the weekend as they beat Cerro Coso 12-3.  Valles had just one hit for the Lady Eagles, but drove in a game high 4 runs.  Sierra Yagle had 3 hits and scored 3 runs as MSJC took the five inning victory.  Valles also earned her first pitching victory of the season as she went four innings allowing 3 earned runs, Erl came in to pitch a scoreless 5th to seal the victory.

MSJC 3-1 on the year will be off this week, before returning to action on Monday February 5th when they travel to Saddleback College.  Next Monday's game is scheduled for 5 pm.
