The MSJC volleyball team will begin the 2013 season on Saturday with an alumni game on the San Jacinto Campus at 4 pm.
The Lady Eagles are hard at work preparing for the season opener August 31st in Ridgecrest. MSJC kicks off the season with matches against Alan Hancock and Cerro Coso. First year head coach Kevin Pratte is pleased with the direction the team is headed; "The two most enjoyable things so far for me in my new position is how I have been embraced by the entire athletic staff and by how quickly our girls bought into the system we are implementing," said Pratte. "When we all get on the same page I think the sky is the limit".
MSJC will begin the season with just three returning players from last season, but they are excited about a number of newcomers. Setter Alissya Theis from Yucaipa High will be looked to as an offensive facilitator for the Lady Eagles, while UC-Riverside transfer Taylor Kushner will be counted on to provide some offensive pop as the team's right side attacker. Coach Pratte is also excited to see Brazilian freshman Jessica Goncalves fill her role as one of the squad's top outside hitters.
The Lady Eagles are coming off a tough season a year ago and will also be playing in a new conference this Fall. MSJC is now a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in all sports other than women's golf and football. "We don't talk too much about expectations," said Pratte "we just talk about buying into the program and being highly competitive every day in every aspect of life."
Saturday's alumni game will be the only chance for Lady Eagle fans to see the team prior to PCAC play as MSJC will be busy on the road until October. MSJC's first official home game of 2013 will be Wednesday October 9th when they host conference foe San Diego Mesa at 5 pm.
