MSJC Can't Hold Leads in Five Set Loss to AVC
The MSJC volleyball team won the first and third sets Friday against visiting Antelope Valley, but couldn't hold leads in the second and fifth sets as they lost in a 5 set thriller.
The Lady Eagles started fast as they won the first set 25-16 and built a lead in the second set, before AVC rallied to take the second 26-24. MSJC bounced back with strong serving from Janette Placencia and Allison Hatch to take the third set 25-21. In another back and forth set the Lady Eagles came up short in the fourth 25-23. In the fifth and deciding set MSJC couldn't hold leads of 12-8 and 13-10 as AVC scored the final five points of the match to win the fifth set 15-13.
Natalie Gonzales had 27 kills and 24 digs in the loss, while Leslie Jenkins added 26 kills. Afton McClelland had another big night with 48 assists while back row specialist Sarah Phelps had 25 digs. The loss drops MSJC to 5-6 overall on the season and 0-3 in Foothill Conference action. The Lady Eagles are on the road twice this week as they travel to Rio Hondo on Wednesday and College of the Desert on Friday. Both matches are set for 5:30 pm.
