The MSJC volleyball team played an intense 5 set match on Friday night against the state's 3rd ranked team, Grossmont, and came up just short losing 3-2 in front of a raucous crowd on Sophomore Night.
The Lady Eagles lost the first set 25-19, but rallied back to put the Griffons on their heels by winning the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-22. Grossmont regained the advantage in the fourth as they won 25-16 to force the fifth and deciding set. In the fifth both teams battled making some spectacular plays, but in the end Grossmont won out 15-12.
Taylor Kushner had 27 kills on the night while Iesha Leota added 17. Slyissya Theis had 50 assists and also picked up 13 digs. Kushner led the way in digs with 19 while Kriston Hilkey had 14.
Kushner, Theis, Hilkey, Leota, and Sam Salcido were playing in their final home match of the season as the Lady Eagles celebrated sophomore night.
The loss drops MSJC to 16-7 on the season and 9-5 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play while Grossmont stayed perfect at 23-0 and 14-0.
MSJC has one week left in the regular season and they will play two matches on the road this week. Wednesday the Lady Eagles travel to Mira Costa for a 6 pm match and Friday MSJC will play at San Diego Mesa starting at 5 pm.
