MSJC Volleyball Opens 2016 Splitting Two Matches

The MSJC volleyball team kicked off their 2016 campaign on Saturday by splitting a pair of matches played at San Diego Mesa College.vballteamfor16-opener.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the season with a straight set loss to the host Olympians from Mesa, but rebounded to sweep Citrus College in their second match of the day.  In the Mesa match, MSJC had a hard time finding their offensive footing as they lost 13-25, 13-25, and 16-25.  Alexxis Carillo led the offense with a team high 8 kills.  Luann O'Kane, Jade Bell, and Lauren Robertson each had 4 kills in the loss.  Camryn Bootsma had 14 assists and O'Kane led the defense with 10 digs.

In the match against Citrus the Lady Eagles settled in and their offense came to life as they defeated the Owls 25-17, 25-22, and 25-23.  This time it was Julia Balancier who led the way on offense with 15 kills, while Robertson had 9 and Carillo 8.  Bootsma spread the ball around nicely as she collected 35 assists.  On defense, Bell had a solo block three block assists and 12 digs while Jeannie Hifo picked up 13 digs.

The Lady Eagles, now 1-1 on the season, will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Cypress College for a non-conference match.  The match on Wednesday is set to begin at 6 pm.
