The MSJC volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit on Wednesday night to win a school record 11th straight match by defeating visiting San Diego City 3-2.
The Lady Eagles won a back and forth first set 25-23 to grab an early lead in the match, but a slow start to the second set led to a 21-25 defeat to even it up at 1-1. The third set ended with an identical 21-25 score and the Lady Eagles' winning streak was on the line headed to the fourth. MSJC rallied to win the fourth 25-17 to force the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Eagles second five set match of the week. In the fifth some nerves on both sides of the net led to some sloppy play early, but MSJC responded midway through the fifth to make some big plays down the stretch and come away with the tight 15-13 victory to clinch the match.
Cashlee Hullar had 13 kills to lead the way for MSJC while Ruby Ruiz had 10. Both Jami Loerch and Adrianah Grajeda has 7 kills a piece in the win. Setter Lannie Maffucci had a strong game with 31 assists and 16 digs for the Lady Eagles while Cynthia Arrango picked up 24 digs. Ruiz added a pair of service aces, a solo block, and 18 digs to her 10 kill performance.
The win kept MSJC unbeaten on the season at 11-0 while a very tough San Diego City team fell to 9-5. The Lady Eagles who are in the midst of the best start in school history have two tough matches coming up on Friday when they travel to San Diego to take on Mesa and Grossmont. Grossmont comes into Friday's match with a 10-2 record and are ranked #4 in the latest State poll.
Friday's schedule at San Diego Mesa has the Lady Eagles taking on Grossmont at 1 pm and then Mesa at 2:30.
