The MSJC volleyball team got off to a fast start Friday night winning the first set 25-16 over visiting Pasadena City College and never looked back on their way to a 3-0 season opening victory.
The Lady Eagles took control of the first set early building their lead to 15-9 with some solid passing and an offensive boost from returning All Pacific Coast Athletic Conference performer Taylor Kushner. Pasadena could make it no closer than 5 points in the first as MSJC cruised to the 25-16 win. In the second set the Lady Eagles rallied after trailing 18-22 and again 20-23 to score the final five points of the set and take the victory 25-23. Kushner had four kills during MSJC's final five points of the set
In the third and final set MSJC again controlled the action most of the way as they never trailed on their way to a 25-20 win. Ashley Cork had a crucial ace late in the set and Kriston Hilkey came up with a kill after Pasadena had closed the gap to three at 20-17 to put the final set out of reach.
On the night Kushner finished with a match high 24 kills while Meghan Bartko added 9 and Hilkey finished with 5. Setter Alissya Theis had a strong night with 28 assists while Sam Salcido led the defense with 22 digs.
MSJC now 1-0 on the season return to action on Saturday September 6th when they travel to Imperial Valley to take part in a tournament. The Lady Eagles return home on Wednesday September 10th when they host San Bernardino Valley at 5 pm.
Taylor Kushner and Mercedes Bree go for a block Friday night as the MSJC volleyball team kicked off their season with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Pasadena City College. Kushner recorded a match high 24 kills in the victory.
