The MSJC women's basketball team will start their season on Thursday night when they host Victor Valley in the first round of the San Jacinto Lion's Club Tip-Off Tournament at 7 pm.
The Lady Eagles will be shooting for their third straight conference title during the 2014-15 season. MSJC will feature six sophomores on this year's squad, five of whom played last season and one that was a member of the 2012-13 state runner up team. Johnette Brown (29 Palms HS) leads the returning group after being named First Team All Pacific Coast Conference last season as a freshman. Brown averaged over 10 points and 8 rebounds a game for MSJC as they Lady Eagles finished the year 23-7. DeShea Wilkes (Murrieta Valley HS) and Erin Stanford (29 Palms) also return after playing in all 30 of MSJC's games a season ago. Kenyetta Fugate (Rialto HS) and Kat Thomas (Perris HS) also return from last year's team. Lailahni Tuaila (Hemet West Valley HS) returns to the Lady Eagle line up after playing her freshman season in 12-13.
The 2014-15 freshmen group of players include last season's Mountain Pass League MVP Sarina Johnson (Hemet HS) and 6'1 Genaya Wilkinson (San Jacinto HS). Also expected to contribute during their freshman seasons will be a pair of redshirts from a season ago Kahnique Austin (Hemet West Valley) and Christina Grant (Perris HS). New to the program this year are Lauren Morrison (Riverside King), Andraliegha Lee (29 Palms), Suzie Castro-Larsen (Riverside Notre Dame), and Alisia Spearman (Moreno Valley Rancho Verde).
The San Jacinto Lion's Club Tournament starts Thursday with a game at 5 pm featuring Orange Coast College against Barstow followed by MSJC and Victor Valley. Friday at noon Chaffey will take on Palomar and at 2 pm Cerritos will play Antelope Valley. All eight teams will be in action on Saturday starting at noon and the tournament wraps up on Sunday with games at 11 am and 1 pm before the championship game at 3 pm.
