Lady Eagle Basketball Team Earns Share of Conference Title with Win
The MSJC women's basketball team earned their fourth conference title in the last six years Wednesday by defeating visiting San Bernardino Valley 83-57 on Sophomore Night.
The Lady Eagles got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 15-3 lead and led 26-17 after the first quarter. MSJC then led 44-35 at the half, before breaking the game open in the third quarter by out scoring the Wolverines 21-5 to led 65-40 headed to the final 10 minutes. The Lady Eagles pushed the lead all the way to 32 midway through the 4th on their way to the victory.
Britney Thomas had another monster game statistically for MSJC as she scored a team high 29 points on 13 of 18 shooting from the field and grabbed a game high 22 rebounds. Kaila Gower was next for the Lady Eagles with 19 points. Delacy Brown had a strong game despite some shooting woes as she went for 17 points, pulled in 7 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists. Carla Johnson controlled the game from the point guard position for much of the game as well handing out 5 assists and adding 5 rebounds.
Prior to tip-off Wednesday the Lady Eagles honored their 8 sophomores on this year's team with a tribute video and quick presentation. Six of the Lady Eagle sophomores; Brown, Johnson, Gower, Geneza Rose Manlulu, Tyra Fai'malo, and Marissa Williams were all part of last season's 26-5 team that reached the CCCAA Regional Semi-Finals. Madeline Morrow was a one year player for MSJC after transferring following her freshman season and Thomas played for MSJC during the 2015-16 season leading the team to a 30-2 record and a trip to the CCCAA State Final Eight before sitting out last year due to injury.
The win improved MSJC to 26-2 overall on the season, they finish Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division play at 7-1, SBVC fell to 14-12 overall and 2-5 in conference. The Lady Eagles hold a half game lead over Palomar who is currently 6-1 in PCAC North action and finish with a home game Friday against MiraCosta.
MSJC wraps up the regular season on Friday with a road game at PCAC South Champion San Diego City at 5 pm.
