Lady Eagle Basketball Team Moves onto State Elite Eight
The MSJC women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and held off a very good El Camino team on Saturday night to win 81-67 in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Finals and
advance to this week's State Final Eight.
The Lady Eagles opened the game by taking a 9-0 lead and led after the first quarter 24-13. The Warriors settled in during the second period and trimmed MSJC's lead to 45-35 by halftime. They then made a strong push in the third period as the Lady Eagles went cold from the field and the Warriors cut the lead all the way down to 2 at 56-54 headed to the final 10 minutes. MSJC responded in the fourth period to pull away for the win out scoring El Camino 25-13 in the final quarter.
Britney Thomas led all scorers in the game with 27, she also pulled in a game high 14 rebounds. Delacy Brown took over the fourth quarter for the Lady Eagles as she scored 14 of her 25 points in the last 10 minutes. Brown also had 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Carla Johnson had a strong game for MSJC as well with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists, Kaila Gower and Madeline Morrow each grabbed 6 boards in the win for the Lady Eagles. Alyssa Walton came off the bench to add valuable minutes as she scored 7 points and had 7 rebounds in 14 minutes of action.
The win improved the Lady Eagles to 29-2 on the season while the Warriors conclude their season at 21-7. With the win MSJC moves on to the CCCAA State Final Eight for the second time in the past three years and the third time in the past six. The State tournament will pit the four Regional Champions from Southern California against the four from NorCal in the State quarter-finals on Thursday. MSJC's quarter-final game will be at 7 pm on Thursday against College of the Sequoias. The State semi-finals are set for Saturday and the championship game will be Sunday afternoon. All Final Eight games will be played at Ventura College.
