Lady Eagle Basketball Team Wins Chaffey Tourney
The MSJC women's basketball team won three games over the weekend to claim the championship at the Panther Pride Tournament held at Chaffey College.
The Lady Eagles opened the tournament on Friday with a convincing win over Skyline College 92-48. MSJC built a lead of 51-15 at the half and cruised to the victory. Britney Thomas led the offense with 26 points, she also pulled in a game high 12 rebounds. Delacy Brown scored 13 points in the win and also had 8 assists, while Kaila Gower added 12 points and Madeline Morrow had 11. Twelve different MSJC players scored in the victory.
In Saturday's semi-final MSJC came out of the gates quickly building a 25-11 lead after the first period on their way to a 76-56 win over #11 ranked Los Angeles Trade Tech. The two teams were playing for the second time in two weeks. Brown led the Lady Eagle offense with 24 points, she also pulled in 9 rebounds. Thomas had another monster game as she scored 22 points and pulled in a career high 24 rebounds. Gower also reached double figures for MSJC with 10 points.
Sunday in the tournament championship game the Lady Eagles struggled shooting, but were able to overcome it with a 68-52 win over Chaffey. MSJC led 30-18 at the half, but the Panthers fought hard cutting the lead all the way to 3 late in the third period before MSJC responded out scoring Chaffey 25-12 in the fourth quarter. Gower scored a game high 21 points to lead the MSJC offense while Brown had 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Carla Johnson had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in the title game. Thomas nearly had her third double double of the weekend in limited playing time due to foul trouble and finished the day with 8 points and a game high 11 boards. Gower earned all tournament recognition for her play over the three days, and Brown earned tournament MVP honors.
MSJC is now 8-1 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Bakersfield for a 6 pm game.
