Lady Eagle Basketball Wins Panther Pride Tournament

​The MSJC women's basketball team picked up three wins over the weekend to capture the championship of the Panther Pride Tournament hosted by Chaffey College.hayleijanssenschaffey-18.jpg

The Lady Eagles started the tournament on Thursday with a 60-43 win over Skyline College.  MSJC led by just three at the half, but out scored Skyline 32-18 in the second half to secure the victory.  Three MSJC players reached double figures in the win led by Raena Lasley who came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 7 rebounds.  Serena Hickey added 11 points and 5 assists while Alyssa Walton had 10 points.  Hickey and Haylei Janssens each had 8 rebounds to tie for team high honors.

In Friday's semi-final MSJC had a strong start against Saddleback to grab a lead of 33-24 at the half, but then had to hold on down the stretch to win 58-55.  The Lady Eagles got a pair of double doubles from Janssens and Walton to lead the way as Janssens finished with 16 points and a game high 14 rebounds while Walton ended the night with a game high 18 points and 11 boards.  Lasley had a game best 7 assists in the victory.


In Saturday afternoon's championship game MSJC got off to a dreadful start as they fell behind Southwestern 23-12 after the first period.  MSJC would go on to out score the Jaguars 33-18 over the next two quarters and then 23-21 in the final 10 minutes to secure the 68-62 win and the title.  This time MSJC saw three players record double doubles as Walton, Janssens, and Sharonda Edwards all reached the mark.  Walton once again had a game high 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Janssens this time had 17 & 11.  Edwards who is working her way back from an injury had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in just 23 minutes of action.

For their efforts on the weekend Walton was named to the All-Tournament team and Janssens was named MVP of the event.

The wins improve the Lady Eagles to 7-2 on the season.  MSJC will travel to Moorpark on Saturday for a 2 pm game, it is their only contest this week.  Moorpark defeated MSJC in the championship of the Saddleback Tournament two weeks ago and is expected to be the #1 ranked team in the state when the new​ poll comes out later today.
