The MSJC women's basketball kicked off their season over the weekend by winning two of three games in the MSJC Tip-off Tournament.
The Lady Eagles fell in their season opener to Antelope Valley 66-62 on Friday night in a game that was close throughout. Neither team ever had a lead bigger than 7 in the game as the two teams exchanged leads several times. MSJC couldn't capitalize on two free throws late and missed a game tying 3 pointer with 5 seconds left. Brittany Neely came off the bench to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring with 19 points including 5 three pointers. DeShea Wilkes also reached double figures with 10 points.
MSJC bounced back on Saturday to beat Victor Valley 76-50 in a game the Lady Eagles led the whole way. Tamara Herring led the MSJC offense with 18 points while Cora Lopez had a monster game with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Neely once again reached double figures with 12 and Johnette Brown had 10 in the victory.
The Lady Eagles made it two in a row on Sunday when they beat Palomar 70-58. MSJC was able to blow open a close game at the seven minute mark to take the consolation championship at the tourney. Lopez once again had a big game as she scored 17 points and pulled in a tournament high 19 rebounds. Brown led the team in scoring with 23 and Neely chipped in with 13.
Lopez was named to the All Tournament Team for her efforts over the weekend. MSJC will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Barstow for the Lady Viking Hi-Desert Classic starting on Friday. The Lady Eagles open the tournament with a 1 pm game Friday against Porterville.
Cora Lopez had back to back double doubles on Saturday and Sunday and was named to the All Tournament Team at the MSJC Tip-Off Tournament where the Lady Eagles went 2-1.
