The MSJC women's basketball team kicked off their season this weekend with three home wins to capture the championship of the San Jacinto Lions Club Tip-Off Tournament.
The Lady Eagles opened the tourney and their season Friday night with an 82-52 win over Barstow College. Britney Thomas scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the way for MSJC. Sarina Johnson added 16 points and Genaya Wilkinson had 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. MSJC led by just three at the half, before out scoring the Vikings 48-21 in the second.
In Saturday's semi-final game the Lady Eagles built a 34-18 halftime lead over Citrus on their way to an 81-45 win. Thomas once again led the way as she posted a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson had 18 points and 9 boards and 5 assists. Suzie Castro-Larsen also recorded a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Crystal Malveaux had 9 points and 5 assists.
Sunday's championship game was close throughout as the Lady Eagles edged Palomar 70-67 in a rematch of last year's tournament title game. MSJC trailed by 6 points at the half, but managed to take the lead for good with just over 5 minutes to play in the game on a driving hoop by Malveaux to make the score 62-60. Thomas came up big once again scoring 23 points and hauling in 13 rebounds, Johnson finished with 20 points, and Malveaux had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Wilkinson protected the paint for the Lady Eagles blocking 7 shots and grabbing a game high 14 boards.
Thomas was named MVP of the tournament averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds in the three games. Johnson and Malveaux were named to the All Tournament team. The Lady Eagles are now 3-0 on the season and will be back in action on Friday when they play Victor Valley in the first round of the High Desert Classic at Barstow College. Friday's game in Barstow tips off at 3 pm.
