The MSJC women's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Saturday night and never trailed as they beat visiting Citrus College 78-66 in a 2nd round CCCAA State play-off game.
The Lady Eagles led 23-14 after the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 44-30 by halftime on their way to victory. MSJC's biggest lead of the night came with 8:47 to play in the fourth period when they led by 20. The Lady Eagles held off a tough Citrus team, who was coming off a first round win over Chaffey on Wednesday night.
Britney Thomas, the Southern California State Player of the Year, led the MSJC attack as she finished her night with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 blocked shots. Sarina Johnson and Nokomis Cabrera each added 11 points in the win. Cabrera was key to the Lady Eagles building their early lead as she scored all of her points in the first half. Genaya Wilkinson also came up big for MSJC, as she came off the bench to score 9 points, pull in 7 rebounds, and block a game high 6 shots. Crystal Malveaux had 5 assists and 6 points as MSJC had 23 total assists on 31 made field goals, Suzie Castro-Larsen had 6 points and 6 rebounds.
The win improved MSJC's record on the sesaon to 29-1, they advance to the Regional semi-finals on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles will host Cypress College Wednesday night at 7 pm. Citrus wraps up their season at 18-11.
