The MSJC women's basketball team blew open a close game midway through the second half on Saturday night to defeat Moorpark College 61-42 in the Southern California Regional Finals.
The win by the Lady Eagles advanced them to the state Final Four next weekend in Sacramento. MSJC will play Santa Rosa in the State Semi-Finals Saturday night at 7 pm at Consumes River College.
Saturday the Lady Eagles and Moorpark played a hard fought and physical first half with MSJC pulling ahead for a 26-21 lead at the break. In the second half the Raiders stayed within striking distance trailing just 40-35 with 10:50 to go in the game before MSJC stretched out the lead with a 16-0 run that lasted over 7 minutes. The Lady Eagles biggest lead of the game came with just over a minute and a half left when they were up 60-37.
MSJC's offense was led by Foothill Conference MVP Tina Fantroy who scored a game high 24 points in the victory, she also had a game high six steals. Destiny Melton nearly recorded a double double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Kerah Natividad shook off a slow first half to score 11 points and grab 6 boards. Faith Fantroy directed the Lady Eagles offense with 8 assists to go along with a team high 13 rebounds. MSJC outrebounded Moorpark 51-35 on the night. Lailahni Tuaila gave the Lady Eagles a spark during their 16-0 run with a basket, two assists, and three rebounds to help in the victory.
The Lady Eagles improved their season record to 29-2 while Moorpark finished the year at 19-13. MSJC and Santa Rosa will be joined in the Final Four by Mt. San Antonio and Fresno City College. The State championship game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
