The MSJC women's basketball team won three games over the weekend in Rancho Cucamonga to claim the title of the Panther Pride Tournament at Chaffey College.
The Lady Eagles started the weekend with a 92-45 win over Oxnard on Friday. MSJC jumped out to a 45-21 lead and cruised to the victory behind 26 points from Sarina Johnson and a 19 point 14 rebound effort from Britney Thomas. Nokomis Cabrera came off the bench to add 9 points and point guard Crystal Malveaux passed out 9 assists without making a turnover.
In Saturday's semi-final contest MSJC outscored the host team Chaffey 31-15 in the second quarter to pull away before halftime on their way to a 79-49 win. Randi Johnson led the offense Saturday for the Lady Eagles as she came off the bench to score a team high 16 points. Sarina Johnson added 15 points while Christina Grant had 11 and Suzie Castro-Larsen scored 10. Malveaux was efficient running the offense once again recording 8 assists and just 1 turnover.
In Sunday's Championship game MSJC had to hold off a tough Los Angeles Trade Tech team to come out with an 85-73 victory. Thomas had another double double despite foul trouble as she scored a team high 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Sarina Johnson had 16 points and 7 assists while Grant scored 14 points and hauled in 7 boards. Castro-Larsen scored in double figures for the second straight day with 10 points.
Thomas and Grant earned All Tournament Team honors for the effort in the three games and Sarina Johnson was named the tourney's MVP.
The Lady Eagles are now 9-0 on the season and will have this week off before playing in the Desert Winter Classic beginning on December 17th at College of the Desert. MSJC will open the tourney with a game at 1 pm against Fullerton on the 17th.
