Lady Eagles Take Third at Ventura, 12-3 Headed to Conference Play

The MSJC women's basketball team won two of three games this past week in the Ventura Holiday Tournament in their final non conference games of the season to claim third place.teambeachforweb.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament Sunday with a 61-58 victory over LA Valley College.  Sarina Johnson led the MSJC offense in the game with 23 points, she also grabbed 7 rebounds.  Erin Stanford added 11 points and 6 assists and Lailahni Tuaila came off the bench to score 14 points in the victory.

Monday MSJC let a 6 point halftime lead slip away as they lost in the semi-finals to San Bernardino Valley 70-67.  The Lady Eagles had two opportunities in the last 30 seconds to tie or take the lead, but could not take advantage.  DeShea Wilkes was MSJC's top scorer in the game with 24 points, while Johnette Brown had 11.  Genaya Wilkinson had a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

MSJC rebounded on Tuesday to win the third place game 71-67 over a very good El Camino team.  This time the Lady Eagles overcame a 6 point halftime deficit to win the contest.  Stanford led five MSJC players in double figures with 15 points including two 3 point baskets in the final two minutes.  Tuaila added 13 points and 13 boards while Brown, Wilkes, and Wilkinson each had 10 points.  Wilkinson earned all tournament honors for her play in the three games.

MSJC is now 12-3 on the season and will open Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play this week.  The Lady Eagles will be at home on Wednesday January 7th when they host Imperial Valley in a 5 pm game.
