Lady Eagles Win Mesa Tourney Title

The MSJC women's basketball team won the championship game Saturday of the Holiday Inn Invitational at San Diego Mesa College by defeating Orange Coast College 63-41.faithforweb.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament on Thursday with a 79-64 win over San Diego City College.  In that game four MSJC players scored in double figures led by 22 points from Kerah Natividad.  Natividad also had a team high 14 rebounds in the victory.  Destiny Melton also recorded a double double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Tina Fantroy added 17 points while Faith Fantroy flirted with a triple double with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.

In Friday's semi-finals the Lady Eagles used a stifling defense to defeat Cuesta College 68-39.  T. Fantroy scored 17 straight points for MSJC late in the first half, including 5 three point baskets, as the Lady Eagles blew the game open grabbing a 38-10 halftime advantage.  T. Fantroy finished the night with 22 points, while F. Fantroy reached double figures again with 11.  Cora Lopez came off the bench to add 7 points and 6 rebounds.

Saturday's championship game with Orange Coast was close at the half with MSJC holding a 29-23 lead.  The Lady Eagles started the second half strong and out scored the Pirates 34-18 in the second half to win their third tournament of the year.  T. Fantroy and Natividad both had 15 points in the victory while Gina Fernandez added 14.  Tina Fantroy earned MVP honors of the tournament while Faith Fantroy was named to the All Tournament team.

MSJC is now 13-1 on the season.  The Lady Eagles begin Foothill Conference play on Saturday January 5th when they host Cerro Coso College.  Game time on the 5th is 1 pm.


Faith Fantroy was named to the All Tournament Team last weekend as she helped lead the MSJC women's basketball team to the championship at the San Diego Mesa Holiday Inn Invitational.  The Lady Eagles are now 13-1 on the season and kick off Foothill Conference play on Saturday January 5th.
