On Friday in the tournament semi-finals the Lady Eagles fought back from an early deficit to take a double digit lead in the fourth quarter, but had to hold on down the stretch as they beat Los Angeles Valley 79-78.  MSJC trailed by 6 at the half 42-36, but took control of the game midway through the fourth period, but missed free throws and ill advised fouls down the stretch gave the Monarchs a chance to tie the game with just .4 seconds left when they had three free throw attempts with the Lady Eagles up 79-76.  LA Valley made the first two, but missed the third to allow MSJC to win it.  Delacy Brown led MSJC with 25 points and 7 rebounds while Britney Thomas had a double double with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Kaila Gower and Maddie Morrow also reached double figures in scoring with 15 and 12 points each.

In Saturday night's championship game MSJC jumped out of the gates quickly as they went ahead of Ventura 25-4 in the opening 7 minutes, but the Pirates clawed their way back into the game and the Lady Eagles hung on for an 80-76 victory.  Brown and Marissa Williams each hit a pair of free throws in the final 7 seconds for the win.  This time it was Thomas who led the offensive attack with 31 points and 15 rebounds while Brown finished with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Thomas was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while Brown earned all-tournament honors.

The wins improved MSJC to 15-1 on the season.  The Lady Eagles will now play four cross-over games in the next two weeks with teams from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference South Division, before opening up conference play in the PCAC North.  This week MSJC will travel to Imperial Valley on Wednesday for a 5 pm game and then host San Diego Mesa on Friday at 6 pm.

MSJC's Britney Thomas had two double doubles including 31 points and 15 rebounds in the championship game to help the Lady Eagles basketball team win the Ventura Optimist's Club Tournament this past weekend.  For her efforts Thomas was named MVP of the event.  MSJC is now 15-1 on the year and will return home on Friday January 5th to take on San Diego Mesa at 6 pm after traveling to Imperial Valley on Wednesday.  (DeeAnn Bradley/MSJC).
