MSJC Women's Basketball Wins Desert Winter Classic

The MSJC women's basketball team won three games over the weekend including a 68-61 victory over Riverside City College on Saturday to claim the championship of the Desert Winter Classic hosted by College of the Desert.erinmvpcod.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament in dominate fashion as they defeated LA Harbor 92-49 on Thursday in the opening round.  12 of the 14 MSJC players that played in the game had at least 2 points led by Lailahni Tuaila who came off the bench to score 20.  Sarina Johnson added 13 and DeShea Wilkes reached double figures with 10 points.  Erin Stanford controlled the game from the point guard position with 7 points and 7 assists.

In Friday's semi-final game the Lady Eagles once again got off to a fast start and built a 41-23 halftime lead and cruised to a 79-50 win over Mission College.  Tuaila again led in scoring for MSJC with 15 while Johnette Brown and Johnson both had 14.  Stanford just missed a triple double with 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.

The Lady Eagles got off to a slow start on Saturday in the championship game as they fell behind 30-24 at halftime before rallying to out score RCC 44-31 in the second half to beat the Tigers 68-61 and claim the title.  Brown and Wilkes led the way on offense with 14 points a piece while Stanford had 11.  Brown and Genaya Wilkinson also each pulled down a game high 12 rebounds a piece.

Brown and Johnson both earned all tournament honors for their play in the three games and Stanford earned MVP honors.  The Lady Eagles are now 10-2 on the season and will have the week off before traveling to the Ventura Tournament December 28th through the 30th.  MSJC will open that tourney with a 3 pm game against LA Valley on the 28th.

 

Erin Stanford helped the MSJC women's basketball team to wins over LA Harbor, Mission, and Riverside City College this weekend as the Lady Eagles claimed the championship of the Desert Winter Classic in Palm Desert.  Stanford was named MVP of the tourney for her play over the three games.
