The MSJC women's basketball team won Saturday night 70-47 against Barstow to advance to the championship game of the San Jacinto Lions Club Tip-Off Tournament, but came up short Sunday afternoon against Palomar.
On Saturday night the Lady Eagles pulled away late in the second half for the win over Barstow. Sarina Johnson and DeShea Wilkes led the way on offense with 15 points a piece. Johnette Brown had 11 points and pulled in a game high 8 rebounds while Erin Stanford scored 9 points.
In Sunday's Championship game the Lady Eagles got off to a slow start and built a deficit they could never quite recover from as they lost to Palomar 80-67. Palomar's hot shooting in the first half and pressure defense allowed them to build a big halftime lead. MSJC responded in the second half, but could never quite push back into the game. Johnson led the way on offense for MSJC with 23 points while Stanford added 9 and 5 assists. Brown was also solid again as she scored 9 points and had 7 rebounds.
For their efforts over the weekend Stanford and Johnson were named to the all tournament team, Palomar's Keisha Cox, who scored 34 in the title game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
MSJC now 2-1 on the season will be back in action this weekend when the travel to the High Desert Classic in Barstow. The Lady Eagles open the tournament with a Friday game against Porterville at 2 pm.
