The MSJC women's basketball team won three games over the weekend to capture the title at the High Desert Classic, played at Barstow College.
Friday the Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a 72-39 win over Victor Valley. In that game freshman forward Britney Thomas poured in a game high 26 points and also hauled down 16 rebounds as MSJC jumped out to a 36-21 halftime lead. Nokomis Cabrera came off the bench to add 11 points, and point guard Crystal Malveaux passed out 9 assists in the victory. In Saturday's semi-final game it was Sarina Johnson who led the way for the Lady Eagles as she scored 19 points and MSJC defeated Lassen College 78-42. Thomas added 12 points in Saturday's victory and Randi Johnson chipped in off the bench with 10 while Christina Grant had a game high 9 rebounds.
In Sunday's championship game MSJC defeated the tournament host Barstow College 75-53. Thomas once again was the Lady Eagles top scorer with 17, Genaya Wilkinson had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Suzie Castro-Larsen had 11 points.
Sarina Johnson and Lauren Morrison, who played strong defense throughout the weekend, were named to the All Tournament Team, and Thomas earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors for MSJC.
The Lady Eagles are now 6-0 on the season and will have Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to action at the Panther Pride Tournament at Chaffey College December 4th-6th. MSJC will open that tournament with a game against Oxnard on the 4th at 5 pm.
