MSJC Women Defeat Cypress, Reach State Elite Eight
The MSJC women's basketball team defeated Cypress 92-76 on Wednesday in a CCCAA So Cal Regional semi-final game to advance to the State Elite Eight.
The Lady Eagles struggled early for points, but were able to overcome an early 14-4 deficit. MSJC stayed within striking distance in the first quarter as they trailed 24-17 after one period. The Lady Eagles found their rhythm in the second quarter as they held Cypress scoreless for the final 5:45 of the first half as they were able to build an 8 point lead at halftime 37-29. MSJC scored the first four points of the third period to push their lead to 12 and led by double figures most of the final 18 minutes.
Four MSJC players ended the night in double figures and two more had 8 points in the victory. The Lady Eagles were paced by Britney Thomas who had a double double with game highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds. Sarina Johnson added 16 points for the Lady Eagles, as did Koko Cabrera. Cabrera also pulled in a career high 8 rebounds. Genaya Wilkinson had a double double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Christina Grant was solid with 8 points and 8 boards for MSJC, while Crystal Malveaux added 8 points as well, she also grabbed 8 rebounds. The Lady Eagles dominated the glass as they out rebounded the Chargers on the night 60-27.
The win improved MSJC's season record to 30-1 and they now advance to the CCCAA Southern California Regional Finals on Saturday night. The Lady Eagles will host East Los Angeles Saturday night at 7 pm. Cypress finishes their season at 24-7.
