MSJC Women Hold Off Southwestern

The MSJC women's basketball team shot just 31% from the field on Wednesday night, but their defense and rebounding allowed them to defeat visiting Southwestern College 59-50 in a Pacific Coalayvssouthwestern.jpgst Athletic Conference

The Lady Eagles and Jaguars combined to shoot 47 free throws in a foul plagued first half, before a late run by MSJC gave them a 37-22 lead at the break.  MSJC pushed the lead to as much as 17 and two different occasions in the second half, but Southwestern stayed in the game getting it as close as 8 with under 5 minutes to play.  DeShea Wilkes led the Lady Eagle offense with 10 points while Johnette Brown added 9 and Suzie Castro-Larsen had 7 off the bench all in the first half.  Genaya Wilkinson finished with a team high 9 rebounds and Erin Stanford pulled in 7 boards and passed out 5 assists.

The win for the Lady Eagles was their fifth straight and improved their record to 18-4 overall on the season and 6-1 in PCAC action.  Southwestern fell to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in league play.  MSJC will travel to Imperial Valley on Friday for a 7 pm game, before returning home next Wednesday to host first place Palomar at 5.
