MSJC Women Upset at Home by Bakersfield
The MSJC women's basketball team, currently ranked #4 in the State, lost for the first time this season on Saturday night as they fell to visiting Bakersfield 84-83.
The Lady Eagles, who entered the game 9-0, got off to a strong start as they led after the first quarter 28-21 and built the lead at halftime to 49-35. MSJC slowly saw their lead start to slip away in the third quarter, but did still have the advantage at the end of 30 minutes 69-63. The Lady Eagles seemed to answer each time the Renegades got close, but a offensive rebound and put back by Bakersfield with 4 seconds remaining in the game turned out to be the difference. MSJC did get a final shot from about 12 feet for the game winner, but the shot fell off the rim as time expired.
Randi Johnson led the MSJC offense on the night with 20 points, she also had 8 rebounds. Crystal Malveaux added 15 points, including back to back baskets in the final 3 minutes that seemed to right the ship for MSJC. Delacy Brown finished the night with 14 points and 6 assists before fouling out with three minutes left in the game. Kristian Dewitt came off the bench to record a double double for the Lady Eagles as she finished the night with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 9-1 on the season. MSJC will be back in action this week when they take part in the Desert Winter Classic at College of the Desert. The Lady Eagles first game of that tournament will be Thursday at 1 pm when they take on LA Southwest.
