The MSJC women's basketball team won three games this week to close out their non conference schedule at 15-0 as they won the championship of the Ventura Optimists Club Tournament.
The Lady Eagles started the week on Monday with a 76-37 win over El Camino College. After a tightly contested first quarter, MSJC out scored El Camino 21-4 in the second period to pull ahead by a score of 38-18 at the half. The Lady Eagles built the lead in the second half on their way to the easy win. Britney Thomas scored 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for MSJC while Sarina Johnson added 24 points in the victory.
Tuesday MSJC was able to pull away in the fourth quarter for a 75-56 win over Orange Coast. The Lady Eagles led by 11 at the half, but the Pirates kept it within striking distance until the final 8 minutes. Thomas led four MSJC players in double figures with 21 points, she also grabbed a game high 16 boards. Johnson added 12 points, while Nokomis Cabrera came off the bench to score 10. Lady Eagle point guard Crystal Malveaux added 10 points and 8 assists in the win.
Wednesday night's championship game was a thriller as the Lady Eagles came back from a 17 point second half deficit to upend fifth ranked Ventura 82-79 in overtime. Johnson had a huge game for MSJC as she scored a game high 31 points and pulled in 12 rebounds as well as passing out 4 assists. Thomas finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 1 minute to play in regulation. Cabrera added 9 points off the bench and Malveaux had 8 points and 4 assists. Genaya Wilkinson and Christina Grant came up big inside with Thomas out of the game as each had a crucial go ahead put back in overtime for MSJC to secure the victory.
Thomas was named the tournament's MVP while Johnson was named to the All Tournament Team. MSJC heads to Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play with a record of 15-0, the Lady Eagles are currently ranked #2 in the state and are tied for the #1 ranking in Southern California in the latest CCCWBCA poll. MSJC will kick off PCAC play on Wednesday January 6th when they host Southwestern at 5 pm.
