MSJC Women Win Two of Three in Ventura
The MSJC women's basketball team won two of three games this past weekend in the Ventura Optimist's Club Tournament picking up wins on Friday and Saturday before falling in the finals on Sunday.
The Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a 43-29 win over Irvine Valley. Both teams struggles shooting from the field, but MSJC prevailed behind 11 points from Sharonda Edwards and 10 points from Haylei Janssens. Madeline Gray led the rebounding effort for the Lady Eagles with 11 while Serena Hickey and Raena Lasley each had 5 assists.
In the semi-finals on Saturday MSJC out scored LA Valley in every quarter on their way to a 69-48 victory. Britney Neely had the big offensive game for the Eagles with 25 points while Alyssa Walton added 11. Janssens pulled in agame high 11 boards and Hickey again picked up 5 assists.
In Sunday's final MSJC led for three quarters, before a late push by Ventura gave the Pirates the 73-62 win on their home floor. Neely again led the way in scoring with 18 while Walton added a double double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Edwards reached double figures in scoring with 11.
Edwards and Neely both earned All-Tournament for their performances over the weekend. The Lady Eagles are now 12-4 on the season and return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Mt. SAC at 1 pm.
