Women's Basketball Champions of Winter Classic

The MSJC women's basketball team got off to a fast start on Thursday and then picked up two more wins on their way to winning the title at the Desert Winter Classic played in Palm Desert.DelacyBrownforCODtourney-16.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament hosted by College of the Desert on Thursday with a convincing win over LA Southwest 100-38.  MSJC was able to build a first quarter lead of 31-7 and a halftime lead of 55-16 on their way to victory.  Delacy Brown led the way on offense for the Lady Eagles with 28 points.  Crystal Malveaux added 16 points while Kristian Dewitt had 14 points in her first starting assignment of the season.  Randi Johnson also reached double figures in scoring with 10.  Kaila Gower came off the bench to add 9 points and 6 rebounds, while Jaquel Quest had 8 points and Nokomis Cabrera had 7 and 5 assists.

In Friday's semi-final game MSJC squared off against Los Angeles Trade Tech for the second time in two weeks and the Lady Eagles came away with another victory over the Beavers 64-59.  The Beavers who came into the game ranked #10 in Southern California jumped ahead of MSJC 13-0 in the first quarter before the Lady Eagles settled in and came back to lead 30-29 at the half.  MSJC seized control by the middle of the third quarter and built their lead to as much as 14 before holding on for the victory.  Dewitt was MSJC's top scorer on the day with 16, she also grabbed 8 rebounds.  Brown added 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Saturday's championship game saw MSJC defeat the State's #9 and So. Cal #5 ranked team Pasadena City College 87-72.  The Lady Eagles held a four point lead at the end of the first quarter and built that to a 43-32 lead at halftime.  MSJC slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter as they dominated the glass out rebounding the much bigger Lancers 57-34 on the day.  The Lady Eagles pulled in 31 offensive rebounds in the victory.  Brown had a monster game with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Malveaux and Johnson each had double doubles as well, with Malveaux scoring 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 6 assists while Johnson scored 20 and hauled in 10 boards.  Cabrera came off the bench to add 10 points.

Johnson earned All Tournament honors for her effort in the three contests while Brown was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Lady Eagles are now 12-1 on the season and will have a break in their schedule until after Christmas.  MSJC returns to action when they travel to Ventura for their final non-conference tournament of the year December 28th through 30th.  The Lady Eagles will open the tournament on the 28th against LA Valley at 3 pm.

#12 Delacy Brown was named MVP of the Desert Winter Classic after helping the MSJC women's team to the championship over the weekend with three wins.  Brown nearly had a triple double in the championship game with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.
