Women's Basketball Opens the Season Winning Lion's Club Tourney

The MSJC women's basketball team opened the season this weekend by winning three straight games on their way to the championship of the San Jacinto Lion's Club Tournament.lionschamps16.jpg

The Lady Eagles opened the season in dominating fashion on Friday as they defeated Barstow College 98-33.  MSJC used a full court press to dictate the game in the first quarter as they built a 27-7 lead after the first 10 minutes.  From there MSJC cruised to victory as 11 different players scored in the game.  Delacy Brown led the way for MSJC Friday as she poured in 30 points, she also had 4 assists in the win.  Randi Johnson added 12 points for the Lady Eagles and Kristian Dewitt and Nokomis Cabrera each came off the bench to score 10.

Crystalforlions16.jpgOn Saturday MSJC defeated Antelope Valley in the tournament semi-finals 85-50.  The Lady Eagles only led 14-12 after the first period, but went into the locker room at halftime up 42-27.  MSJC slowly pulled away from there as they outscored the Marauders 43-23 in the second half.  Crystal Malveaux led the Lady Eagles on Saturday with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Brown had another strong game with 16 points while Britney Thomas added 12.  Carla Johnson came off the bench to add 11 points and 3 assists.

In Sunday afternoon's championship game the Lady Eagles got off to a strong start, building a 10-0 lead on Palomar as they went on to win 93-66.  Thomas had her best game of the weekend as she scored a game high 30 points and grabbed a tournament high 22 rebounds.  Malveaux had another good day as she collected 15 points and 6 rebounds.  Johnson and Dewitt both had 12 points for MSJC and Kaila Gower was solid off the bench with 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Brown and Thomas were both named to the All Tournament team, while Malveaux earned Tournament MVP honors.

The Lady Eagles who are now 3-0 on the season will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Barstow to take part in the High Desert Classic.  MSJC will open that tournament on Friday at 3 pm when they take on Lassen College.
