The MSJC women's basketball team began defense of their 2018 State Championship this weekend and came away with two wins and a loss in the San Jacinto Lion's Club Tip-Off Tournament.
The Lady Eagles opened the season with a win Friday night against Orange Coast 95-42. MSJC pulled away midway through the first quarter on Friday to lead 30-11 after the first 10 minutes and then grew the lead to 51-24 by halftime. Sharonda Edwards led the offensive attack with 25 points, she also hauled in 11 rebounds. Raena Lasley came off the bench to add 14 points and Madeline Gray and Alyssa Walton both had 10 points a piece in the victory. Haylei Jannsens had a game high 12 rebounds as MSJC dominated the glass out rebounding the Pirates 70-35.
In Saturday's tournament semi-finals, MSJC overcame a poor first half to down Barstow 83-73. The Lady Eagles out scored the Vikings 29-11 in the third period to seize control of the game. Britney Neely led the MSJC offense this time with 23 points while Jannsens added 15 and 9 rebounds. Edwards and Gray both had 11 points as once again MSJC used their rebounding advantage to control the game as they pulled in 48 boards compared to 30 for Barstow.
In the championship game on Sunday, MSJC could not recover from a poor second quarter and lost to Palomar 89-70. The two teams played even in the first period as the score was tied at 16 after one. The Comets however used their pressure defense to out score MSJC 36-21 in the second period to take control of the contest. MSJC would fight back early in the third to cut the lead to 6 on three separate occasions, but Palomar settled back in and the Lady Eagles could not catch them. Neely once again led the offense with 20 points while Serena Hickey added 14 and Tamera Gills had 10. Alyssa Walton pulled in a game high 10 rebounds.
Walton and Neely earned All-Tournament honors for their play on the weekend. MSJC now 2-1 on the season will travel to Mission Viejo this week to play in the Saddleback Gaucho Classic. The Lady Eagles open the tournament against Compton on Thursday at 3 pm.
