The MSJC women's basketball team picked up three wins over the weekend at the Desert Winter Classic in Palm Desert.
The Lady Eagles opened play with a 75-58 win over Mission College on Friday night. MSJC led by just one 21-20 at the end of the first quarter, before slowly pulling away over the next 30 minutes. Haylei Janssens led the way for MSJC as she scored a team high 21 points and pulled down a game high 16 rebounds. Britney Neely came off the bench to add 15 points on five made three pointers. Janya Smith also was strong off the bench as she scored 11 and grabbed 4 boards. Raena Lasley dished out 5 assists.
Saturday afternoon MSJC trailed by two after the first period, but out scored Pasadena 19-12 in the second quarter and 21-13 in the fourth on their way to a 65-54 win over the Lancers. Neely led the way this time as she scored 16 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and handing out 4 assists. MSJC did not have the best of shooting days going just 22 of 61 from the floor, but the Lady Eagles recorded an assist on every field goal during the contest. Janssens finished the game with 8 points while Alyssa Walton had 7. The loss was just the second of the season for Pasadena.
Sunday's game saw the Lady Eagles break the game open in the second and third quarters on their way to a 79-62 win over Copper Mountain. Janssens had her second double double of the weekend as she had 22 points and 11 rebounds which were both game highs. Lasley filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists while Walton added 16 points and Madeline Gray pulled in 10 rebounds in the victory. Serena Hickey had a game high 7 assists for the Lady Eagles.
The wins improve the Lady Eagles to 10-3 on the season and the team will not return to the floor until after Christmas. MSJC will take part in the Ventura Tournament December 28th through the 30th before playing at home on January 5th when they host Mt. SAC. MSJC opens the Ventura Tournament on the 28th with a 5 pm game against Irvine Valley.
