Women's Hoops Ready to Kick Off Season at Home Friday
The MSJC women's basketball team will open their season on Friday night at 7 pm when they host San Diego Mesa in a first round game of the San Jacinto Lion's Club Tournament.
The Lady Eagles, who enter the season ranked #2 in the CCCWBCA pre-season South Region poll, will be hosting an 8 team tournament Friday through Sunday. Friday's action starts with a 1 pm game between Palomar and Barstow. That game will be followed by Chaffey against Southwestern at 3 pm and Antelope Valley vs. Copper Mountain at 5 pm. Games will continue on Saturday at 12, 2,4, and 6 pm and the tournament will wrap up on Sunday with a consolation championship game at 11 am, a third place game at 1 pm, and the tourney title match up at 3 pm.
MSJC begins the year coming off a 26-5 2016-17 season in which they lost in the CCCAA Southern California Regional Finals. The Lady Eagles are expected to be led by a large group of sophomores which include 2015-16 Southern California State Player of the Year Britney Thomas (San Jacinto) and 2016-17 2nd Team All-Stater Delacy Brown (Riverside Poly). Thomas played in three games last year, before an injury cut her season short. Brown led MSJC in scoring as a freshman last season averaging 18.7 points per game. They will be joined by fellow sophomores; Marissa Williams (Lakeside), Kaila Gower (Heritage), Geneza Rose Manlulu (Chaparral), Carla Johnson (Perris), Tyra Fai'malo (Redlands East Valley) and transfer sophomore Maddie Morrow (Riverside King). All will enter the season with substantial experience earned last season. The freshmen class is headed by post playres Alyssa Walton (Victor Valley) and Kaelee Kelly (Lancaster) as well as sisters Tavian and Raena Lasley from Lakeside High School. Octavia Williams (Murrieta Mesa) will also be expected to contribute from the start. Guards Tamera Gills (Battle Creek, MI) and Kiana Castello (Noli Indian) round out the MSJC newcomers.
This will be the only time the Lady Eagles play at home until after New Year's, come out an enjoy some great Community College women's basketball action this weekend in the MSJC's newly renovated gymnasium.
